On August 27th, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. federal agencies to use “American Lake” for Lake Ontario. Ontario Premier Doug Ford rejected the change and subsequently launched a giant bilingual sign near Grimsby proclaiming “Lake Ontario. Now and Forever.”

The “Obama Lake” inscription on this t-shirt is a form of political satire, not the official name proposed by Ford. The idea stemmed from online reactions to the dispute. After attention shifted to an unrelated body of water in Northern Ontario called Trump Lake, Canadians began suggesting humorous alternative names, including the widely circulated suggestion of Barack Obama.

The debate became even clearer when Google Maps began displaying “Lake America” to users in the US, while Canadian users still saw Lake Ontario and users elsewhere could see both names.
