The Gulf of Mexico Kennedy Center Lake Ontario Shirt connecting the three names has become part of a broader political debate about renaming places and institutions. In January 2025, President Donald Trump directed US federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” for the area previously federally identified as the Gulf of Mexico.

The Kennedy Center has faced a separate naming dispute. A federal judge ruled in May 2026 that the center’s board of directors could not unilaterally change the organization’s name and ordered Trump’s name removed. The board then voted in August to add language crediting Trump with the restoration and renovation, leading to another legal challenge. As of August 27, planned signage changes had been postponed until at least October 8 while the dispute continued.

Lake Ontario became the latest hot spot on August 27, 2026, when Trump signed an executive order directing the US federal government to use “Lake America”. Canada continues to use the name Lake Ontario, while Google Maps now displays different names depending on the user’s region.
