The Big Bear eagle community is mourning Jackie after the California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that she passed away on the night of August 9, 2026, following more than three weeks of intensive medical treatment. Jackie was the first recorded bald eagle hatchling in Big Bear Valley in 2012 and subsequently raised many eaglets alongside Shadow.

Friends of Big Bear Valley report that Shadow was still active around the habitat just before Jackie’s death. Their two 2026 eaglets, Sandy and Luna, were last seen on camera on July 23rd and are believed to have begun their independent journey out of the valley.
